UAE e-invoicing: what your business needs ready before 2027

Compliance · 10 Oct 2026 · 6 min read

The UAE is moving business-to-business and business-to-government invoicing onto a national electronic system. Invoices will no longer be PDFs sent by email. They will be structured data files, exchanged between businesses through accredited providers and reported to the Federal Tax Authority as they are issued.

For most companies, the work is less about tax and more about IT: getting the accounting or ERP system to produce invoices in the right format and connecting it to a provider. This article covers the dates, what you need to decide, and where the IT effort usually goes.

The dates that matter

The rollout is phased by company size. Based on the Ministry of Finance announcements reported so far:

  • Businesses with annual revenue of AED 50 million or more must appoint an Accredited Service Provider (ASP) by 30 October 2026. This was extended from the original 31 July 2026 deadline. Mandatory e-invoicing starts on 1 January 2027.
  • Businesses below AED 50 million are expected to appoint a provider by 31 March 2027 and go live on 1 July 2027.
  • Government entities follow later in 2027.

A pilot phase with selected taxpayers started on 1 July 2026, and any business can join voluntarily before its deadline. Dates have moved before, so check the latest Ministry of Finance and FTA guidance before you plan around them.

What an Accredited Service Provider does

The UAE uses a model where your invoices travel through an ASP rather than going straight to the tax authority. The provider converts and validates your invoice, sends it to your customer's provider, and reports the tax data to the FTA. Only providers accredited by the Ministry of Finance can do this, and the Ministry publishes the list.

Choosing a provider is a business decision, but it has IT consequences. Ask each candidate how they connect to your system: a ready-made connector for your ERP, an API your developers or vendor will need to integrate, or a portal where invoices are uploaded. The answer decides how much work sits on your side.

Where the IT work usually is

  • Your invoicing system. Find out whether your ERP or accounting software vendor supports the UAE format and a connection to your chosen ASP. Older or heavily customised systems often need an upgrade or middleware.
  • Master data. Electronic invoices are validated automatically, so missing tax registration numbers, inconsistent customer names and free-text product descriptions start causing rejections. Clean your customer and item data early.
  • Receiving invoices. You will also receive supplier invoices electronically. Decide where they land, who approves them and how they reach your accounts payable process.
  • Archiving and access. Electronic invoices must be stored and retrievable. Agree with your provider what they keep, for how long, and how you export it.
  • Testing. Plan a test period with real invoice scenarios: credit notes, foreign-currency invoices, discounts and corrections. These are where formats tend to break.

A simple plan for the next few months

  1. Confirm which phase your company falls into.
  2. List every system that creates or receives invoices, including any branches or separate entities.
  3. Shortlist ASPs that support your ERP and ask for a demo of the full flow.
  4. Fix your master data while the provider is being set up.
  5. Test end to end, then train the finance team before go-live.
